How Long Does a Spray Tan Last?

Seven to ten days with proper aftercare — and a straight list of what stretches that out and what cuts it short.

A spray tan from The Sunless Method typically lasts 7 to 10 days with proper aftercare.

That’s a real range, not a hedge. Where you land inside it is almost entirely down to what you do after you leave — and specifically, how fast your skin sheds.

Why aftercare decides it

Sunless colour lives in the top layer of your skin. Your body replaces that layer constantly. So a spray tan doesn’t really “fade” so much as it leaves along with the skin it’s sitting on.

Anything that speeds up shedding shortens the tan. Anything that keeps skin hydrated and intact stretches it.

That’s the whole principle. Everything below follows from it.

Your first shower

This is the step with the most room for error, and it depends on which solution you had.

  • Original solutions — wait at least 8 hours before rinsing
  • Rapid solutions — rinse in 3 to 7 hours, depending on how deep you want the colour

Both keep developing after that first rinse. Rinsing early on a rapid solution gives you a lighter result on purpose; rinsing early on an original solution just gives you less tan than you paid for.

When you do rinse: warm water only, no soap, no shampoo, no loofah. Rinse until the water runs clear, then pat dry — never rub.

Not sure which solution you had? Text and ask. Rinsing an original on a rapid timeline is the most common way a good tan gets cut short.

What stretches it

  • Moisturise once or twice daily with a fragrance-free, sulfate-free product
  • Use gentle, sulfate-free body wash only
  • Pat dry every single time
  • Keep showers warm rather than hot, and short

Moisturising is the one that does the heavy lifting. Hydrated skin sheds slower. It’s genuinely that simple.

What cuts it short

Products: bar soaps, oil-based products, exfoliants, sulfate body washes, alcohol-based toners, acne treatments, perfumed lotions, and waxing after your tan.

Activities: pools, hot tubs, saltwater, saunas, steam rooms, hot baths, heavy exercise, tight clothing, rough towel-drying, excessive hand-washing.

Chlorine and saltwater are the fastest of these. A long afternoon in a pool can take days off.

Planning around an event

If you want peak colour on a specific day, don’t book the tan for that morning. Colour keeps developing after the rinse, and you don’t want to be watching a clock while you’re getting ready.

For a wedding or a big event, ask about a trial first — and get your timeline from the person actually spraying you rather than from a generic guide.
